There is so much beauty in this world. This morning, after an amazing swim in the natural river, I watched the sunrise. This evening, I watched the sunset with Asaf. Both were breathtaking—calming, grounding, a reminder of what truly matters. And yet, in between, life was hectic and intense. I’m trying to let go of anything I don’t have to carry and focus on taking care of myself.
Walking with Asaf and watching the sunset together reminded me how blessed I am.
Tomorrow, Asaf is going on an overnight trip with his cycling group. The knowledge that he is part of a community, truly included, fills me with joy beyond words.
Today is Autism Awareness Day, but awareness alone is not enough. We need to move beyond awareness to acceptance, inclusion, and most importantly:
PRESUME COMPETENCE .
For years, I was led to believe that Asaf had the cognitive abilities of a toddler, but when he finally had the opportunity to communicate through typing, I discovered the incredible person he truly is—intelligent, thoughtful, and deeply aware.
Non-verbal does not mean non-thinking. Non-speaking does not mean non-feeling. True inclusion begins when we stop underestimating individuals based on their ability to speak and start recognizing their potential.
Presume competence. ALWAYS!.
